| Mellfell House Farm sits high on the slopes of Little Mellfell, overlooking Ullswater, in the north-east of the Lake District National Park. The house itself is a lovely 17th century farmhouse, and its old barns have been converted into cottages. Although no longer a working farm, its seventeen acres support cats, dogs, horses, sheep, ducks, hens and a cow, most of which wander freely. |
 |
| The area is outstandingly beautiful, with huge contrast and variation in the landscape. In a relatively small
area there are soaring uplands, with wild crags, tumbling streams and dramatic waterfalls giving way to
tranquil lakes, gentle farmland and stone farmhouses, all criss-crossed by a network of drystone walls.
Changes in the weather and light depending on time of day and season constantly transform the landscape.
The geology of the area, with volcanic upheaval and glacial action resulting in the mountain and valley
countours of today, coupled with its rich historical past and abundance of wildlife, make it a
fascinating place to visit. |
 |
| You may choose to leave your car at the farm and walk the unspoilt local footpaths and lanes, or
possibly take an eight mile circular ramble over Gowbarrow Fell, of Wordsworth’s ‘Daffodils’ fame, to
the spectacular Aira Force waterfalls. Perhaps you will explore the high mountain tops (the owners are
keen hill walkers and can discuss routes and provide reading matter), or take the less strenuous lower
but equally delightful paths around the lakeshore and into surrounding valleys. You can visit the pretty
hamlets and villages around Ullswater, or travel slightly further afield into the Eden Valley or other areas
of the Lake District. |

Facilities for fishing, climbing, cycling, mountain biking, rowing, canoeing, windsurfing, sailing,
pony-trekking and golf are all available nearby.
The market town of Penrith is eight miles from the farm, and the historic city of Carlisle twenty-five
miles. There are many museums, castles, churches, stone circles, ancient relics and other places of
interest in the surrounding area, and there are several good pubs serving food in the area, including the King's Arms, Stainton.
